In Kerala, there is a big festival called Onam. It is highly valued in Malay culture and has its roots in a fascinating legend.

History and Significance of Onam: Onam is a festival that commemorates the homecoming of King Mahabali.He was well regarded throughout his kingdom for his benevolence and moral character. Lord Vishnu came to his court disguised as a humble Brahmin. The Brahmin asked for three pieces of land he could cover with his three steps. Amused by the Brahmin's humility, King Mahabali agreed instantly. It was then that Lord Vishnu revealed his true form, covering the entire Earth in one step and the entire sky in the next. With no place left for the third step, Mahabali realized the Brahmin was divine. He offered his head for Lord Vishnu's third step.Mahabali was saved as a result, and his request to visit his realm once a year was granted. People celebrate Onam to welcome the return of King Mahabali. In some parts of Kerala, people even dress up as King Mahabali to help children understand the festival's significance.

The 10 Days of Onam: Onam is celebrated for more than ten days with cultural programs, dance performances, and flower decorations like rangoli. Here's a breakdown of the main days:

Day 1 - Atham: People wake up early, pray, and create rangoli with traditional flowers called Pookalam in front of their homes.

Day 2 - Chithira: Additional layers of orange and yellow flowers are added to the Pookalam.

Day 3 - Chodi: Another layer of flowers is added, and people buy new clothes and jewelry.

Day 4 - Vishakam: This day marks the beginning of the traditional Onam feast called Onasadya, featuring a meal served on banana leaves with 11-26 dishes.

Day 5 - Anizham: A traditional snake boat race called Vallamkali is organized on this day.

Day 6 - Thriketa: People visit their ancestral homes and other places.

Day 7 - Moolam: Families gather to meet each other, and Pulikali, a traditional folk art form, is performed.

Day 8 - Pooradam: People add fresh flowers to the Pookalam and exchange gifts.

Day 9 - Uthradam: The grand celebration for King Mahabali's arrival takes place on this day.

Day 10 - Thiruvonam: On the final day, people create rangoli with rice paste at their doorstep and engage in firework displays in the evening.
